In his landscaping blog, Fernando Pozuelo unveils ‘El Jardín de las Alianzas,’ an unprecedented dreamlike space inspired by the Homeric myth and the love story of Ulysses and Penelope recounted in The Odyssey. This landscaping masterpiece, signed by Fernando Pozuelo Landscaping Collection, marks a return to origins and raw materials. Recognized with international awards such as the ‘Muse Design Award’ and ‘A’Design Award & Competition,’ this project seamlessly blends nature, design, and meticulous attention to detail.
Located in a private garden in Uclés, a small town in Cuenca (Castilla-La Mancha) with significant heritage value, this 260-square-meter space involved the work of over 100 professionals and artisans. The result is a unique garden with an atmosphere of harmony and beauty, where controlled lighting with home automation, color, the influence of hidden mathematics in landscape design, and an immersive auditory system take center stage.
“‘El Jardín de las Alianzas’ has become one of the most ambitious projects for the studio to date. We translated our client’s request into a unique space—a dreamlike garden that exists as an unreal world with no room for human judgment. A place filled with beauty expressed through allegorical forms, shells, animals, and mythological beings. To date, nothing similar has been projected in Spain and probably in Europe,” explains Fernando Pozuelo.
**A Symphony of Stimuli: Art, Traditional Craftsmanship, and the Language of Hidden Mathematics**
‘El Jardín de las Alianzas’ fulfills the owners’ desire to immortalize their love story by materializing it in a fascinating place. Fernando Pozuelo has approached this challenge by creating a 360º landscape design. He employed the language of hidden mathematics applied to landscape design, using natural materials crafted by artisans combined with lush flora. The underlying theme of this creation is an earthly sentiment that magnifies and culminates in universal love.
Its layout follows a mathematical synchrony: the garden’s golden point weaves a relationship between the cosmos and a constellation-studded firmament set into the ground. Every detail selected by Fernando Pozuelo allows the garden to symbiotically blend with its surroundings.
The facades of the buildings surrounding the garden are covered with legends and traditions unique to Cuenca, while the original fountain and gate add a fantastical element to the garden. On the ground, the pavement includes a light pattern reminiscent of the Milky Way, and wicker coverings and water features in shell-shaped pergolas, along with a misting system that cools the summer air, transport visitors to an underwater world. At the bottom of the pool—lined with nacre mosaic—a blue heart conceals a movable floor capable of changing its depth and transforming into a stage. The design is enriched with lush vegetation including palm trees, cypress olives, perennials, and climbers.
The traditional craftsmanship of Castilla-La Mancha has a strong presence. The value of traditional crafts is reflected in wickerwork following local traditions, the chiseling of pavement pieces resembling the blocks of the Uclés Monastery, and the artisanal arrangement of brick flooring forming undulations like those created by clay in the region’s fields.
This layout includes meticulous mathematical details: the Fibonacci sequence—by mathematician Leonardo de Pisa—sets the separation pattern between the waves of the pavement, referencing the underwater background. And the Gamma number—known as the impossible number for reason—determines the number of LED lights composing the firmament on the garden floor.
‘El Jardín de las Alianzas’ is the world’s only private garden with a soundtrack. This musical structure not only references the project but also represents the region. The symphony travels worldwide, featuring instruments from all five continents.
This symphony of stimuli, combining art, hidden mathematics, and craftsmanship, provides an atmosphere of beauty and practicality without sacrificing the functionalities of a family garden. The space includes a welcoming area, a seating area, recreational and relaxation spaces, and a pool.
‘El Jardín de las Alianzas’ has a documentary showcasing its creation process, translating the essence of the garden into a language that appeals to delicacy and sensitivity. Coinciding with the garden’s inauguration, the Fernando Pozuelo studio presented the owners with a coin symbolizing the garden’s symbolism, rings representing eternal love between the lovers of the Homeric myth, and a narrative about the project. An exclusive detail designed by the studio for the completion of each project.
The garden, awarded the most prestigious design honors, has been internationally recognized. Specifically, the renowned ‘A Design Award and Competition’—one of the world’s most prestigious and influential design awards—has honored this natural space with the Iron A’Design Award. Additionally, the landscaping project has received the Platinum Winner by ‘Muse Design Awards,’ the highest accolade from the New York (USA) and Malaysia Design Awards. This award highlights ‘El Jardín de las Alianzas’ as the perfect union of aesthetics, craftsmanship, technology, and functionality.
